POLOKWANE ACADEMIC CAMPUS:
the place of challenge for clinicians, educators and hospital management

The decision to form MEDUNSA satelite academic campus in Limpopo province was signed in 1996. For the past 8 years government has been providing substantial financial resources for the realization of this project. The appealing Polokwane institution came into being as a result of such politics and this new establishment cannot even be compared to the old Pietersburg hospital that stood in its place before.

However, experience showed that erecting beautiful buildings and purchasing modern medical equipment was the easiest part of the overall project. Attracting suitable personnel for the Polokwane academic campus proved to be a more difficult task, which still presents challenges to us today. The campus requires the following personnel:

(1) Young medical professionals to make sure that medical treatment is at least on the level of a good tertiary institution;
(2) Educators to provide high standard teaching programmes and medical research;
(3) Specialists in hospital management to organize proper use of the provincial and regional hospitals and their equipment.

Some people are of the opinion that the lack of interest in the Polokwane academic campus from the local medical professionals is the result of the insufficient remuneration. Certainly this is an important factor and we are hoping for an improvement of this area, but as Jesus used to say - man can’t live only by bread but by the word of God… One can rephrase this biblical quote so that it applies to medical professionals and especially dedicated academics: Medical man can’t live only by a good salary but by professional challenge...

Part one:
CLINICAL CHALLENGE

I will not bore you with a listing of all the interesting and complicated operations done by the doctors of surgical specialisations on our campus - neurosurgeons, ophtalmologists, ENT-surgeons, thoracic and abdominal surgeons, orthopedic and vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, Ob/Gyn and urologists.

Part two:
CHALLENGE FOR EDUCATORS and PARADISE FOR STUDENTS

... is a known challenge in this country. The key academic staff of our campus, Professors Molehe and Mahowski, managed to receive an approval from the SA HPC for the invitation of educators from the countries of Eastern Europe.

Representatives of Ukraine were the first ones to arrive...

Later they were joined by educators from the shores of the famous Russian river Volga and the not less well-known taiga forests of Sibiria...

At the moment approximately 10 educators from Poland, Ukraine and Russia are getting accustomed to the specialties of the South African medical educational programmes. The goal is to develop a single improved educational programme – the programme of the Polokwane academic campus.

One of the biggest problems for the young doctors located remotely from provincial hospitals is their insufficient practical training in the fundamentals of surgery. We hope that establishment of the basic skill lab at the Polokwane academic campus can help to solve this problem.

For the past four years every Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. Dr. J. Van der Merwe (Private specialist radiologist) gives an hour-tutorial in diagnostic radiology to the hospital doctors.

It is very important to stress that Dr. J. Van der Merwe does this for free – all these four years...
This is really an example of practical implication of the Bible words “man can’t live only by bread”

M&M MEETINGS

There is a well known statement that high standard of surgical service can be guaranteed only in the presence of permanent control by peers.

Prof. Leo Gordon (California, USA) uses M&M meeting for teaching young doctors difficult science and practice of surgery.

Professor A. Machowski within eight years has successfully managed to establish regular M&M meetings of the surgical department. For this year the chairman of the M&M was the young specialist in surgery, Dr. Bhuyan…

Part three:
CHALLENGE FOR HOSPITAL MANAGERS

This part of my presentation will be the shortest one:
bosses all over the world are the same - they don’t like any intervention in their business.

Even in my thoughts I am far from any such type of intervention into our hospital management business - I don’t have enough slides and ideas for this. I just want to use the presentation to remind the management about the extremely high daily cost of every bed in our hospital. The latter demands more effective use of the hospital beds. This is a very complex task: how to provide higher rotation of every single bed during a year and how to exclude any use of the hospital beds as hotel beds. This is a real challenge for the management – huge field for research and investigation.

Conclusion:
I am a witness of the development of the “POLOKWANE ACEDEMIC CAMPUS” project during the last seven years and I can say this – for every medical professional to get job at our hospital is great honour and privilege.
